Art and Indonesian come together with masks!
By bandicoot In Bandicoot Unit, Magpie Unit, School EventsIn Term 1 the children enjoyed a PBL topic on masks combining the learning areas of art and Indonesian.
The focus of the PBL was for the students to learn about the meaning and symbolism of Indonesian masks and understand that masks are a way of expressing or concealing an identity. They examined real Balinese masks and watched videos of traditional mask makers and mask dances in Bali.
Each student was asked to produce a handmade mask using papier-mâché. The mask needed to reflect an emotion and character. They had to draft several designs, critique them and then select the final design which they would use for their mask.
Various painting and decorating techniques were used during the mask making process.
The students also had to write a descriptive text in Indonesian to accompany their mask.
The final results were fabulous and showcased in an end of term exhibition.
